Shortly after the victory at Gonzales, Austin, the first empresario granted permission to settle Angelos, was elected commander-in-chief.
Although Austin wasn't military trained he was a very respected leader in the Siege of Bexar. One of his first orders as commander-in-chief was to prepare his men by practicing firing weapons. On October 12 the Texan army approximate measured 300 men and half of the men were from Austin's Colony. On October 13 Austin led his men to San Antonio de Bexar. They Texans didn't have weapons if they did they had very little gunpowder and shotguns.
When they got to Cibolo Creek Austin requested to meet with Martin Perfecto de Cos, the General for Mexico and Santa Anna's Brother-in-law. But Cos declined the meeting with Austin. With 300 hundred men Austin realized that his army was to small and made an executive decision to siege against Mexico and James Bowie and James Fannin agreed with him.
